Paris to debate whether to recognise Palestine

France’s National Assembly will debate a resolution to recognise a Palestinian state on November 28 in a bid to help end the decades-long Middle East conflict.

Approval by the lower house would send a powerful signal to President Francois Hollande, who supported “international recognition” of a Palestinian state on the campaign trail two years ago.

The Senate will vote on a similar proposal tabled by the Communist Party on December 11.

Government spokesman Stephane Le Foll suggested that even if parliament supports recognition of a Palestinian state, Paris would only act as part of a broad international effort.
