LONDON Underground chefs victimised for trade unionism will join up with Orgreave justice campaigners today to highlight Establishment union-busting tactics.
Rail union RMT has accused profiteering private contractor Sodexo of victimising Tube staff cook Petrit Mihaj for his role in building an active trade union branch among catering staff at London Underground’s Baker Street depot.
The union will take its fight to Sodexo’s Holborn headquarters at 11am — where they will press for Mr Mihaj’s reinstatement.
An employment tribunal ruled in his favour, saying that he had been fired for his union activities — but Sodexo has so far refused accept the judgement.
Campaigners demanding justice for mine pickets who faced brutal violence from police at Orgreave in 1984 and subsequent cover-ups will be taking a complaint to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which is based nearby.
“RMT has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the miners and we will be proud to have our banners on the protest over the slow progress with the IPCC investigation into the policing at Orgreave during the strike in 1984,” said RMT general secretary Mick Cash.
“The union-busters and their supporters have certainly never gone away and are alive and kicking in anti-union firms like Sodexo and in the outrageous treatment of RMT rep Petrit Mihaj.
“This is the most blatant and clear-cut example of victimisation and dismissal on the grounds of union activity that it is possible to imagine — a fact backed up by the employment tribunal.”
