Elephant herd on the move

CHINESE authorities warned people on the outskirts of Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, to stay indoors as they sought to lure a herd of elephants away from their neighbourhood.

The elephants, which are being monitored by drone, have trekked 300 miles from their protected jungle home, traversing farms and now entering the city. Scientists do not know why.

Earlier in the week they patrolled the outskirts of a nursing home, poking trunks through the windows and prompting one elderly resident to hide under his bed. Authorities have blocked roads and are trying to tempt the elephants away from the city with food.
