CP Congress: Tory claims that TTIP worth £100bn 'rubbish'

Controversial free trade comes in for a pasting

Claims that controversial international trade deal TTIP could bring in £100 billion of economic growth were rubbished at the weekend.

Communist Party political committee member John Haylett said the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, a free trade agreement between the US and EU, was "a device to enable transnational corporations to maximise profits" at the expense of working people.

Addressing the party's congress on behalf of Cardiff and South Yorkshire branches, the Morning Star political editor said TTIP was all about "levelling down EU and US environmental, health, safety and other regulations."

Mr Haylett drew on the lessons of previous free trade agreements, quoting a case in Egypt where a French firm sued the Egyptian government for loss of profits when it raised the minimum wage.
