Distribution workers used by Marks and Spencer said yesterday that the initials M&S might more accurately mean Marley and Scrooge because of their treatment of contractors.
Members of general union GMB employed by Tempay Ltd at Marks and Spencer's distribution centre in Swindon protested outside the chain's Slough shop against having to work six days a week until January.
Most of the site's 500 staff are employed through agency 24.7 Recruitment on contract to Tempay Ltd.
Tempay staff are paid the minimum wage of £6.50 per hour compared with £8.50 per hour paid to directly employed workers.
"The way M&S is acting, the letters M&S could stands for Marley and Scrooge, with the mean-spirited way these workers are being treated over the Christmas period," said GMB branch secretary Andy Newman.
