BCM Fareva's workers' considering strike action in the latest fire-and-rehire dispute

RETAIL union Usdaw is to hold a strike ballot at beauty products giant BCM Fareva, where workers are embroiled in the latest fire-and-rehire dispute.

The vote, due to run from next Wednesday to June 2, was announced in response to proposals to impose inferior working conditions on 800 staff at the company’s Nottingham factory, which produces skin care and pharmaceutical products for leading brands such as Boots.

Usdaw slammed BCM, part of French firm Fareva, for pre-emptively threatening to fire and rehire staff who refuse to accept changes to sick pay and redundancy agreements.

The tactic has been used against 10 per cent of all workers during the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the TUC.

Usdaw national officer Daniel Adams said the key workers at the site, who had “given their all” during the crisis, deserved better.

He added: “[This] is totally unacceptable. [The use of] fire-and-rehire means we have been left with little choice. BCM Fareva can stop this now if they withdraw their threat.”

The company has said that it was committed to keeping talks going.
