Scottish CND co-ordinator John Ainslie slammed the Ministry of Defence yesterday for its decision to fund Trident renewal before the 2015 general election.
Speaking at the protest group’s AGM, Mr Ainslie raised concerns that the deal would equip submarines with 12 missile launch tubes, contradicting current British promises to only use 8 missiles in a commitment to reduce atomic armament.
He said that there were worries that this would allow Britain to expand its armoury in secret.
Under the theme of getting rid of atomic weapons following the independence referendum, the conference was attended by hundreds of delegates.
SCND secretary Alan MacKinnon called for unity across the peace movement, saying: “We need to move beyond the 45 per cent who supported a Yes vote.”
