Anti-fracking activists’ trial concludes

The trial of five anti-fracking protesters for obstructing the highway at a site in East Yorkshire is due to conclude today at Beverley magistrates’ court.

Campaigners built a “castle” outside the entrance to the experimental fracking site operated by Rathlin Energy at Crawberry Hill in East Yorkshire.

The defendants are Tom Burke, of Crawberry Hill Community Protection Camp, Sarah Hockey of Walkington, Richard Howarth of Hull, Samantha Atkins of Keighley and Chris Ridden of Grimsby.

The defendants are alleged to have sat down in the road.

They have pleaded not guilty to obstruction, saying that they had not been asked to move before being arrested and that had they been warned and asked they would have moved.

Bailiffs dismantled the castle.

Fracking involves the pumping of chemicals and huge quantities of water in to shale to release gas. Opponents say it threatens water sources and causes pollution of the atmosphere.
