Model punk pop return from stylish Society

Model Society

12 Bar Club, London WC2

4/5

LONDON four-piece Model Society have been locked away for most of the year working on new material and tonight they make a triumphant return live to promote their new single Valentine.

During their time away they have clearly grafted because their ability levels have gone through the roof.

Stephen Kelly’s guitar playing is carving a place between Pete Shelley and Paul Weller circa Setting Sons and the rhythm section has upped its game, as has Eddie Caldwell’s drumming, which now carries a style akin to Bloc Party’s Matt Tong.

And bass player Eddie Van Thanner lays down more aggressive runs, allowing Dan Clare’s vocals to snarl with more authority than before.

The new single is a solid pop punk number with catchy synths and guitar parts but it’s the back-and-forth vocals which steal the show.

Model Society may still be in their infancy but they are clearly a band destined to go places and fast. It’s hard to visualise how their talent can be ignored for much longer.
