Comunes party leader expressed concern over Colombian peace accord

LEADER of Colombia’s Comunes party leader Rodrigo Londono, known as Timoshenko, has expressed concern over the continued executions of former guerilla fighters.

His statement on Saturday followed Wednesday’s face-to-face meeting with right-wing President Ivan Duque, during which the pair discussed the slow progress in the implementation of the 2016 peace agreement.

“The meeting took place in a calm and respectful atmosphere. It was a talk between two counterparts with a common concern, but with profound differences. For us, peace is hand in hand with the full implementation of the peace agreement,” he said.

Some 251 former Farc guerillas have been killed by government forces since the signing of the accord, which brought an end to decades of armed conflict. At least 16 people have died so far this year.

Timoshenko said the safety of former fighters must be protected and threats from government forces had to stop. He expressed concern over the slow integration of combatants back into society.

Farc, the political successor to the armed movement, party renamed itself Comunes at its national assembly in January.
