Athletics body IAAF ethics commission vows to probe doping claims

The ethics commission of world athletics body IAAF said yesterday that it is investigating “grave allegations” about doping made by a German television documentary.

The programme, broadcast on Wednesday evening, claimed to present evidence of systematic doping and corruption in Russian sport.

It claimed that the corruption extends beyond Russia and implicated the IAAF in covering up abuse.

In a statement the body said: “The IAAF has noted a number of grave allegations regarding doping activities related to the sport of athletics in Russia. An investigation is already ongoing.

“We would like to underline that the IAAF ethics commission is completely independent of and has full powers to investigate and issue sanctions when relevant.”

It said that the allegations regarding doping fell outside the remit of the ethics commission and would be “dealt with according to the relevant IAAF rules and in full co-operation with Wada (the World Anti-Doping Agency.”

Wada vowed on Wednesday to fully investigate the allegations.
