Uber taxi driver arrested over passenger rape accusation

Controversial private hire company suspends accused man

INDIAN police arrested a driver with controversial private hire company Uber today over accusations that he raped a passenger.

A 26-year-old woman who used the firm’s app to book a car home in New Delhi on Friday night was driven to a “secluded place” and then raped, according to reports.

Police seized Shiv Kumar Yadav in Mathura, around 100 miles south of the city, where he had fled.

Uber said it has suspended the driver’s account and is co-operating with authorities. “We are working with police and will assist them in any way we can,” it said.

But the assault will fuel concerns in many countries that Uber does not properly vet drivers in the way professional taxi firms do.

Police in New Delhi beat back dozens of protesters trying to enter their HQ today to mount a protest at the growing number of rapes in India’s capital.
