Laura Trott not happy with second place in London

Despite over the years winning Olympic, world, European and Commonwealth titles, Laura Trott was disappointed at finishing second in the elimination race on Sunday.

The 22-year-old from Cheshunt won two gold medals at the Track World Cup, including Great Britain’s fourth of the three-day event in Sunday’s omnium.

Trott is accustomed to winning at the Olympic Velodrome having claimed team pursuit and omnium titles at London 2012, a haul she repeated in the first championships at the renamed Lee Valley VeloPark since the Games.

Yet after winning the first two of the six-discipline omnium, she rued a second-place finish in the elimination race which denied her a shot at a “perfect six.”

She said: “I don’t want to lose on this track, not after what I did at London 2012. That just gives me that little bit extra.

“All my teammates said to me ‘you are going to win all six.’

“I was thinking ‘maybe I could do this.’ (But) after losing the elimination race, the perfect six went.”

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton said though it was reminiscent of London 2012, all the focus now is on 2016.

He said: “The London Olympics was absolutely fantastic but it’s history now. For these guys it’s all about Rio.

“Our winning mentality is coming back. We’re not just relying on the women’s team pursuit winning. Laura can win the omnium and the Madison.

“We’re starting to get some results, which is nice.

“Most of (the riders) have achieved greatness — look at Laura Trott, she’s double Olympic champion, multiple world champion and everything else — but I can see they want it.

“That’s the most important thing. Seeing that want back in their eyes, that whole drive and passion kick back in is a nice thing.”

Britain’s sprinters — including three-time Olympic champion Jason Kenny — failed to claim a medal.
