Scottish Labour MP Katy Clark launched a bid to save women’s council services in Ayrshire yesterday.
The left-wing challenger in Scottish Labour’s deputy leadership contest said that SNP-led North Ayrshire Council has invited tenders for domestic abuse services, including refuge and counselling — but excluding specialised services delivered by charity Women’s Aid, including children and addiction services.
The cuts amount to a 22 per cent reduction in service.
Ms Clark has written to council chief executive Elma Murray stating her opposition to the omissions.
She said: “This tender vastly reduces the services delivered and puts jobs and the quality of service to help vulnerable women who suffer domestic abuse at risk.
“North Ayrshire Council has been proactive in supporting the White Ribbon 16 days of action against domestic abuse via social media.
“It is very disappointing to see them tendering for a vastly reduced domestic abuse service at the same time.”
