KENYA: A stampede during celebrations to mark an annual public holiday killed at least four people today and injured 100.
The stampede happened at dawn when thousands of people struggled to get inside Kericho stadium for this year’s Mashujaa Day in western Kenya, police said.
AUSTRALIA: Canberra announced today that it has decided not to cancel a Chinese company’s 99-year lease on strategically important Darwin Port, despite US concerns that the foreign control could be used to spy on its military forces.
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet said: “Australians can have confidence that their safety will not be compromised while ensuring that Australia remains a competitive destination for foreign investment.”
FRANCE: About 20 people were reportedly arrested across the country today after a wave of bomb threats prompted evacuations.
Prominent venues such as the Palace of Versailles and the Louvre, as well as schools, airports and hospitals, have been targeted by the hoaxers, who are said by authorities to be mainly minors.
Making fake bomb threats is a crime in France punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of €45,000 (£39,000).
SLOVENIA: Checks are being introduced at border crossings with Hungary and Croatia, authorities said on Thursday, following Italy’s decision to do the same with Slovenia due to security concerns stemming from violence in the Middle East.
The government said that the controls would begin today and last for at least 10 days.
Rome said on Wednesday that it would suspend an open-border agreement with Slovenia for 10 days, also starting from tomorrow.
