World in brief: February 19, 2023

KOREAN PENINSULA: North Korea fired a long-range missile into the sea off Japan on Saturday, according to the country’s neighbours.

The test of the missile, which was launched from the capital Pyongyang, took place the day after the North had threatened strong measures against South Korea and the United States over their latest joint military exercises.

The South Korean and Japanese military said that the missile had travelled about 560 miles during an hour-long flight.

 

TURKEY: A couple and their son were pulled alive from rubble in the southern Turkish city of Antakya on Saturday, more than 12 days after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake ravaged parts of Turkey and Syria, though the boy died later in hospital.

Rescuers discovered Samir Muhammed Accar, his wife Ragda and the 12-year-old under a collapsed block of flats. 

 

BULGARIA: Authorities have detained seven people in connection with the discovery of 18 corpses of people believed to be migrants  in an abandoned lorry, according to police.

The bodies were found on Friday in a secret compartment below a load of timber in the lorry, which was left on a highway not far from the capital Sofia.

 

SURINAME: Authoritiesv warned of more arrests and put police on high alert on Saturday, the day after a protest against the policies of President Chandrikapersad Santokhi saw hundreds of demonstrators storm the parliament building in Paramaribo.

Demonstrators marched  to the National Assembly building to protest against price hikes and the reduction of electricity and fuel subsidies at the behest of the International Monetary Fund.
