World in brief: April 20, 2023

ASIA: India is on track to surpass China by mid-2023 as the world’s most populous nation, United Nations data said on Wednesday, raising questions about whether a booming, young Indian population will fuel economic growth for years to come.

The UN report said that India will have about 2.9 million people more than China sometime in the middle of this year.

UNICEF: Some 12.7 children missed one or more vaccinations in Africa between 2019 and 2021 because of the disruptive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, leaving the continent vulnerable to even more outbreaks of disease and facing a “child survival crisis,” a new report from Unicef said today.

Africa has the highest number of unvaccinated and undervaccinated children in the world.

UNITED STATES: Fox News reached a last minute settlement of $787.5m (£634m) in the defamation with United States voting machine company Dominion.

The deal allowed Fox News to avoid a lengthy and potentially embarrassing trial after Dominion alleged Fox had damaged its business by spreading false claims that its machines had helped rig the 2020 election in Joe Biden’s favour.

UNITED STATES: Two teenagers and a 20-year-old man have been arrested and charged with reckless murder in connection with a shooting on Saturday that killed four young people at a sweet 16 birthday party in rural Alabama, investigators announced on Wednesday.

Teenagers Tyreese McCullough and Travis McCullough have been charged with four counts of reckless murder along with Wilson LaMar Hill (20).

The pair are charged with the shooting of Philstavious Dowdell, Shaunkivia Nicole Smith, Marsiah Emmanuel Collins and Corbin Dahmontrey Holston.
