UNITED STATES: The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) announced late on Sunday that it has agreed to the sale of troubled Silicon Valley Bank to North Carolina-based First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company.
The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank on March 10 rattled the banking industry and led FDIC and other regulators to protect depositors, preventing wider financial turmoil.
It was the second-largest banking collapse in United States history.
UKRAINE: The government of Ukraine called on Sunday for an emergency meeting of the United Nations security council to “counter the Kremlin’s nuclear blackmail.”
This came after Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed plans to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
One Ukrainian official said Russia “took Belarus as a nuclear hostage.”
UNITED STATES: Multiple victims have been confirmed after a shooting at a school in Nashville, Tennessee, today.
Nashville Fire Department tweeted: “We are responding to an active aggressor at 33 Burton Hills Blvd Covenant School. We can confirm we have multiple patients.”
The Covenant School, founded in 2001, has around 200 students, according to the school’s website.
TAIWAN: Senior Taiwanese politician Ma Ying-jeou departed for a 12-day tour of China today.
Mr Ma, a member of the islands Nationalist Party, is visiting in a private capacity, bringing a delegation of academics and college students for exchanges, as well as members of his family.
He is expected to tour the mainland until April 7.
Mr Ma’s policies improved relations between the breakaway island and Beijing, but China continues to insist that Taiwan is part of its own territory.
