Protest to be held in hospitals across Wales to demand release of Gaza health workers

CAMPAIGNERS will hold emergency actions outside hospitals across Wales on Saturday in solidarity with Gaza’s health and medical workers.

Activists will meet outside nine sites including Wrexham’s Maelor Hospital, Gwynedd Hospital in Bangor, Grange Hospital in Cwmbran and Royal Gwent in Newport at 2pm.

Rallies will also be staged at Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen,  Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth, Glan Clwyd Hospital in Bodelwyddan, Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest and the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Talbot Green.

Amnesty reports that Israel has detained hundreds of Palestinian healthcare workers without charge or trial during its genocide in Gaza, in which at least 46,000 people have been killed.

“Health workers have been subjected to torture and other ill-treatment and held in incommunicado detention,” it said.

Israel raided and burned down Kamal Adwan hospital, the last functioning health facility in north Gaza, at the end of 2024, leaving those trapped in the besieged area without access to care.

Israeli forces claimed to have taken 240 “terrorists” during the raid.

Among them were health workers including hospital director Dr Abu Safia.

The Euro Medical Human Rights Monitor documented harrowing testimonies of crimes committed by Israeli forces during the raid, including deliberate killings, field executions, as well as sexual and physical assaults on women and girls.

Campaigners are calling on Welsh MPs and Senedd members to attend the emergency rallies and demand the immediate release of Dr Safia, his colleagues and patients.

A spokesperson for the group organising the day of action said: “We call on the British Foreign Secretary David Lammy to insist that Dr Abu Safia and all other health workers held hostage by Israel are released immediately.

“It is more important than ever at the beginning of 2025 that our voice calling for peace and justice for the people of Palestine is heard clearly.”
