SUPPORT for Waorani people in their legal battle against the Ecuadorian government has poured in from environmental and global justice organisations as a court was set to deliver its verdict over the selling of their land today.
On April 11, members of the Waorani tribe took President Lenin Moreno’s increasingly reactionary government to court, alleging they were lied to regarding the earmarking of their land for oil extraction companies.
The tribe contends that a 2012 consultation between them and the government failed to mention any of the negative repercussions caused by fossil fuel extraction from their land.
Hundreds of Waorani people dressed in their traditional clothes marched on El Puyo, the capital of Pastaza province, today to hear the court’s decision, which was expected to be delivered after the Star went to press today.
Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, Avaaz, Indigenous Environmental Network, Amazon Watch and many more have all urged their social media followers to sign a petition in support of the Waorani people’s lawsuit.
