RUSSIA: A court in Melekhovo, 150 miles east of Moscow, today began a trial charging imprisoned opposition leader Alexei Navalny with terrorism.

Mr Navalny, already serving nine years for fraud and contempt of court, could face another 30 years in prison if found guilty under the new charges.

REFUGEES: Multinational companies including Amazon, Marriott and Hilton pledged Monday to hire more than 13,000 refugees, including Ukrainian women who have fled the war with Russia, over the next three years in Europe.

Just ahead of tomorrow’s World Refugee Day, more than 40 corporations pledged to hire, connect to work or train a total of 250,000 refugees, with 13,680 of them getting jobs directly in those companies.

UNITED STATES: Mass shootings and violence across the US killed at least six people this weekend and wounded dozens of others.

The deadly incidents took place in suburban Chicago, Washington state, central Pennsylvania, St Louis, Southern California and Baltimore.

GREECE: A court in Kalamata, southern Greece, will tomorrow begin a hearing for nine Egyptian men accused of being people-smugglers in a case involving the sinking of a fishing trawler last week that killed at least 78 people and left hundreds more missing.

The court postponed the hearing of the nine Egyptians until Tuesday to provide them and their lawyers with time to review the testimonies of nine Syrian and Pakistani survivors, given over the weekend.

A total of 104 people were rescued when the boat capsized and sank off the coast of Greece last Wednesday.
