GREECE: The coastguard found a group of 14 migrants and the body of a man on the shore of a tiny island in the eastern Aegean Sea this morning.
The five men, six women and three children were found on the remote island of Farmakonisi, along with the corpse, authorities said. It was not immediately clear how he had died.
FRANCE: President Emmanuel Macron has opened the door to experiments in some state schools with uniforms or a dress code.
Speaking as as a new classroom ban on long robes worn mainly by Muslims came into effect on Monday, Mr Macron said he was in favour of “experimenting” with uniforms in order to “inform public debate.”
SWEDEN: Two executives from a Swedish oil exploration and production company went on trial in Stockholm today accused of complicity in war crimes in Sudan 20 years ago by securing the company’s oil operations in the African nation.
Prosecutors allege former Lundin Oil chairman Ian Lundin and ex-chief executive Alex Schneiter supported the Sudanese government of former dictator Omar al-Bashir by creating “the necessary conditions” that allowed the Sudanese military and regime-allied militia to “systematically” attack civilians.
SOUTH-EAST ASIA: Leaders of the Asean regional bloc have decided that Myanmar won’t take over its rotating leadership of as scheduled in 2026, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr and Asian diplomats said today.
Mr Marcos said his country would take the Asean chairmanship instead.
The decision follows the Myanmar army’s overthrow of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in 2021 and her detention along with other officials.
