NIGERIA: Tensions rose on Monday during the count for Nigeria’s presidential election when representatives from the parties of the two main opposition candidates walked out in anger from the centre where state-by-state results were being announced.
With 11 of Nigeria’s 36 states having reported as of Monday evening, ruling party candidate Bola Tinubu was leading with 46 per cent of the 6.7 million counted votes so far. He was followed by the main opposition party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, on 29 per cent, and third party candidate Peter Obi, with 20 per cent.
PAKISTAN: On Monday, Pakistani police arrested retired army general Amjad Shoaib, a prominent supporter of former prime minister Imran Khan, on charges of inciting the public and government employees against national institutions.
The charges came after he appeared on Pakistan’s BOL news channel on Saturday criticising authorities for keeping Khan’s supporters jailed.
Mr Khan aims to press the government into holding early elections through a campaign dubbed “fill the jail cells.”
CONGO: A United Nations helicopter came under heavy fire in eastern Congo, bringing the organisation to suspend flights in the conflict-riddled region, the UN said on Monday.
A helicopter came under attack last week but was able to land safely in Goma with all three crew and 10 passengers unharmed, according to a statement by the UN‘s World Food Programme.
MEXICO: Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his opposition to the current government of Peru on Monday, labelling them “an authoritarian and repressive de facto government.”
He accused the Peruvian congress of committing a “great injustice” by dismissing former president Pedro Castillo.
