Social media users in Ghana could face 10 years jail under draconian anti-LGBT Bill

GHANA will debate a draft Bill which proposes a 10-year jail sentence for anyone promoting LGBT activities through social media.

Details of the Promotion of Proper Human Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, which has been submitted to the speaker of Ghana’s parliament for review, were on leaked Friday.

The Bill also seeks to fine those who engage in non-heterosexual sex or hand them a prison sentence of up to three years.

Marriage would also be explicitly defined as between a man and a woman if it passes into law.

The draconian Bill has been tabled by opposition MP Sam Nartey George, who has previously described homosexuality “a perversion.”

He claimed that those raising concerns were “uninformed,” saying that “homosexuality is not a human right but a sexual preference,” vowing to pass the Bill into law.

Ghana’s criminal code does not specifically refer to LGBT people but bans “unnatural” sexual relations.

A committee has yet to be established to review the draft legislation which is expected to pass with amendments.
