Roussel re-elected as general secretary of the French Communists

FABIEN ROUSSEL was re-elected as general secretary of the 42,000-strong French Communist Party today.

At the end of the party’s four-day 39th Congress in Marseille, Mr Rousel was re-elected to the position he has held since 2018 with 80.4 per cent of the vote.

During his closing speech Mr Roussel said he aspired “to be worthy of the trust” of the party membership.

He has been at the forefront of the political fight against the plans by President Emmanuel Macron to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64.

During his speech he told Mr Macron to “respect the French and withdraw your reform, it’s the only good thing you have left to do!

He urged the president to support a referendum on the issue.

Since 2022 French communists have been in a political alliance, the New Ecological and Social Peoples Union, with Jean-Luc Melonchon’s France Unbowed and the Greens. But last week Mr Roussel called the alliance “outdated.”

Today he said ending NUPES was “not a question of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. But you have to change the bathwater from time to time!”

But, he said, French communists will always “keep the door open” to work together on future fights.
