LEBANESE Forces (LF) militia leader Samir Geagea has been summoned for questioning over his role in the ambush of a peaceful march by snipers in Beirut last week.
A judicial official confirmed on Thursday that the authorities were seeking to quiz him after having gathered information during the interrogation of 19 LF militiamen.
Military court representative Fadi Akiki has “instructed the army intelligence to summon Geagea and take his statement based on information provided by arrested LF members,” the official said.
Seven people were killed on October 14 when snipers opened fire as a protest march organised by Amal and Hezbollah to oppose the politicisation of a probe into last year’s Beirut port explosion made its way to the Palace of Justice.
Mr Geagea, a convicted war criminal, has denied involvement in the attack, insisting that residents of the Christian Ain al-Remmaneh district acted in self-defence.
He claimed that he had not been informed of any summons and added that his far-right group, best known for the 1982 Sabra and Shatila massacre of more than 3,000 Palestinians, has no armed members.
