TURKISH occupation forces have allegedly opened fire on a school in northern Syria’s Afrin region, injuring eight children.
The attack took place on Sunday in the village of Mirkan in the Mabata district, an area plagued by kidnappings, executions and torture.
One of the children, Meryem Mihemed Qasim, was reported to be seriously wounded and is believed to have been taken to a hospital in Turkey for treatment.
Last month, two civilians were abducted from their homes by security forces personnel, who demanded a ransom for their release.
According to human rights organisations, more than 700 people have been killed in Afrin since the Turkish occupation began in March 2018.
More than 8,500 civilians have been kidnapped by Turkish forces and their jihadist allies in the same period.
As previously reported in the Morning Star, thousands of women are alleged to have been kidnapped in Afrin and trafficked to Libya, where they are sold as sex slaves.
Women’s organisations in the region have compared the situation to that of the northern Iraqi town of Shengal, where more than 3,000 women and girls were taken hostage by the Isis terror group in 2014.
