Israeli forces raid the home of the East Jerusalem governor

ISRAELI forces stormed the home of the Palestinian governor of East Jerusalem early today.

According to Al-Quds news, police broke into Adnan Ghaith’s home in the Silwan neighbourhood of Jerusalem to check his presence there; he has been held under house arrest since August 2022 for the “crime” of visiting the West Bank.

Since taking office in 2018, Mr Ghaith has been arrested more than 30 times by the Israeli authorities, who have forbidden him from travelling to the West Bank and maintaining contacts with other Palestinian leaders.

Several buildings in the Silwan area are under threat of demolition by the authorities as part of what has been denounced by observers as the collective punishment of Palestinians for alleged attacks by resistance fighters.

Israel claims East Jerusalem is its territory and so forbids anyone connected with the Palestinian National Authority from engaging in political or social activities in the area.

The United Nations and much of the international community reject Israel’s claims and consider the area to be under occupation.
