Israeli air force reservists say they will refuse to serve if Netanyahu's judicial reforms pass

ISRAELI air force reservists said today they would refuse to serve if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proceeds with attacks on the courts.

A letter signed by 110 air force veterans published today said they would cease to report for duty if any laws relating to a planned judicial overhaul pass.

“Legislation like this grants the government limitless power with no restraint by the judiciary and it will bring us to a point of no return,” the letter says. “We will not serve the military of a country that is not democratic.”

The judicial plans — which would give the Knesset the right to overturn Supreme Court rulings with a simple majority, and increase political control over judicial appointments — have prompted gigantic weekly protest demos for months.

Talks on a compromise with opposition parties broke down last week, leading Mr Netanyahu to declare he would proceed with the controversial proposals.
