THE far-right Golden Dawn party crashed out of the Greek parliament in Sunday’s general election, which saw the conservative New Democracy sweep to victory in a crushing defeat for prime minister Alexis Tsipras.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis was sworn in to succeed Mr Tsipras yesterday, promising to “honour the hopes” of the Greek people and claiming that the country would “proudly raise its head again.”
The conservative victory follows four years of rule by Mr Tspiras’s Syriza party, which had promised an end to austerity imposed as a condition for financial bailouts by the “troika” – the EU, European Central Bank and IMF.
Mr Mitsotakis campaigned on a manifesto of lower taxes and increased privatisation of public services.
Golden Dawn failed to reach the 3 per cent threshold required for a party to have parliamentary representation, thus losing all 18 of its legislators.
Its neonazi leader Nikos Mihaloliakos warned of increased street violence as the party refocuses.
The Communist Party of Greece scooped 15 seats after picking up more than 5 per cent of the vote.
General secretary Dimitris Koutsoumpas promised to lead the fight against the “new anti-people government.”
He said the communists would “play the leading role … against the full-scale assault of capital, the EU and Nato in order to pave the way for the real overthrow.”
