Germany announces new Covid measures over winter

GERMANY will reimpose public health restrictions to guard against a renewed Covid outbreak this winter.

The Cabinet today approved legislation which will mandate wearing N95 masks, a particular kind of filtration mask, on all long-distance travel by train and bus.

Masks continue to be compulsory on German flights, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Economy Minister Robert Habeck faced criticism this week after photos emerged of them maskless on a plane to Canada, though they say they abided by the specific rules applying to German Air Force flights and had taken PCR tests ahead of flying.

Other precautions will include required mask-wearing during and testing before visits to hospitals, nursing homes or other institutions with vulnerable residents.

But Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said there would be no more lockdowns, though individual states may impose restrictions beyond those decreed by Berlin.

The measures will apply from October 1 to April 7.
