ECUADOR’S embattled President Lenin Moreno had a package of neoliberal measures rejected by Parliament on Sunday night.
The blow follows his withdrawal of an International Monetary Fund-backed “package” of attacks on workers’ rights and price rises that prompted gigantic protests last month, forcing him to flee Quito and sue for terms.
He has since attempted to blame Cuban doctors providing medical assistance in the country for the protests, and kicked them out.
The reforms rejected on Sunday formed part of the same deal, and included “autonomy” for the Central Bank to remove it from democratic control.
The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador tweeted: “Social pressure first achieved the repeal of decree 883 [the ‘package’ withdrawn last month], and today, we denied another imposition by the IMF that violated the rights of the people.”
Former president Rafael Correa sent “congratulations to the Citizens’ Revolutionary bloc that led opposition to this looting law.”
