Burkina Faso to sign nuclear power deal with Russia

BURKINA FASO is set to sign a landmark nuclear power deal with Russia, it was reported today.

The AIB news agency in Burkina Faso said the two countries have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the West African country.

The agreement follows talks between the Burkinabe military ruler Captain Ibrahim Traore and Russian President Vladimir Putin in July during the Russia-Africa summit in Moscow.

According to the International Energy Atomic Agency, Burkina Faso has one of the world’s lowest rates of access to electricity at about 20 per cent.

Some 60 per cent of the urban population has access, with only about 3 per cent connected.

Despite its significant reserves of natural resources, Burkina Faso, along with other Sahel countries such as Chad, Mali and Niger, is among the world’s poorest nations.

Capt Traore led a military coup in September last year which removed interim president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba from power.

Mr Damiba had himself seized power in a coup eight months earlier.
