US air strikes kill at least two in Yemen

US air strikes in Yemen have killed at least two people, the Houthi-led government said today.

The attacks on the north-western city of Saada also reportedly wounded at least nine others, with footage aired by satellite news channel al-Masirah showing a two-storey building collapsing.

Under US President Donald Trump, an intense campaign of air strikes has targeted the Houthis over their attacks on Israeli and US shipping in the Red Sea.

The Yemeni authorities say their military action is in solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza under attack by Israel.

Early on Saturday, Mr Trump posted what appeared to be an image taken from a drone on a group of several dozen people gathered in a circle.

He claimed: “These Houthis gathered for instructions on an attack,” without giving a location  or any other details.

Official news agency Saba reported that the US bombing had targeted “a social Eid visit in Hodeida governorate.”

Muslims across the world have just celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

“Those present at that gathering had no connection to the operations carried out by the [Houthis],” the Saba report said, adding that the attack had killed and wounded “dozens” of people.
