THE TUC is looking at options to sell Congress House, its grade II-listed headquarters and historic home of the trade union movement.
Its finance committee agreed on March 5 to examine options to invest in the building to meet environmental standards, or sell it to buy a “smaller and more suitable building.”
A TUC spokeswoman told the Morning Star: “This review is driven by the costs of upgrading Congress House to meet modern environmental standards, by the current office rental market and by the fall in demand for conferences and events following the pandemic.
“The TUC’s role is to be the voice of working people. Our commercial and property activity exists to support our work, and it is right that we keep it under review.
“The TUC remains in robust financial health with significant reserves.”
Congress House was purpose-built for the TUC by union labour in 1958 and honours the trade unionists who were killed or injured in the two world wars.
