TORY ministers have been told that they must listen to scientists and not fossil fuel financiers ahead of a meeting with the developers of a Scottish oil field on Tuesday. 

Scotland Office minister David Duguid will sit down with Siccar Point Energy about proposals for the Cambo site near Shetland, which could produce 132 million tons of carbon. 

The Tory MP said today that he was “eager to learn more” about the project. 

But the Scottish Greens have said that British energy policy continues to be written by the oil and gas industry while climate science is ignored. 

Mid Scotland and Fife Green MSP Mark Ruskell said: “Instead of sitting down with the Cambo developer, the UK government needs to be listening to the UN’s climate scientists. 

“There is a huge gulf between the amount of oil and gas we need to use domestically as we make the transition to renewable energy, and the government’s desire to extract every last drop. 

“Cambo oil field is not needed or wanted and suggestions we need to be extracting billions of barrels of oil to make medicine are absurd.”
