Tens of thousands protest in France over security bill

TENS of thousands of people took to the streets of Paris on Saturday as protests against a new draft security Bill continued.

And demonstrations took place in other French cities in opposition to the law which critics warn will restrict filming and exposing police brutality.

Concerns have also been raised over plans to increase the use of surveillance drones and pedestrian cameras.

As many as half a million are believed to have taken part in similar protests in November, but official figures put Saturday’s turnout at just over 32,000. Organisers attributed the smaller number in part to coronavirus restrictions.

Members of the gilets jaunes movement took part in the latest protests against President Emmanuel Macron, whose neoliberal reforms have seen the pensions of rail workers attacked ahead of planned privatisation of the network and huge cuts across the public sector.

At least 26 arrests were made as police used water cannon to disperse crowds in the French capital.
