Teachers take strike action over pupil behaviour issues

TEACHERS at Pencoedtre High School, Barry, continued strike action today over pupil behaviour towards staff members.

Nasuwt Cymru members took their second day of strike action after Vale of Glamorgan Council failed to respond to solutions set out by the school’s senior management team, the union claimed.

Nasuwt Cymru’s Neil Butler said: “Pencoedtre teachers have described being used as punch bags by pupils.

“This is not an environment where any teacher can be expected to teach effectively — and it certainly isn’t an environment where pupils are empowered to learn.”

Nasuwt general secretary Dr Patrick Roach said: “As long as Vale of Glamorgan Council refuses to act to keep Pencoedtre teachers and pupils safe, they will remain in dispute.

“The union will continue to support members at Pencoedtre as they fight for their safety and wellbeing as well as that of their pupils.”

The council was asked to comment.
