Teachers and parents call for action on school cuts

SCHOOLS are still being forced to make cuts due to 14 years of Tory underfunding, leading teachers and parents to call for action by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in next week’s Budget.

Growing class sizes, cuts to subjects such as music, sport and arts and increasing problems in retaining staff are all hitting schools.

Teachers and parents from the National Education Union (NEU) Stop School Cuts campaign will tomorrow present the Chancellor with an open letter signed by over 10,000 parents calling on her to restore school spending to the level of the previous Labour government in 2010.

The letter will be presented by a headteacher and parents from Wood End Infant and Pre-School in Milton Keynes.

As the letter is handed in at 11 Downing Street, two advertising vans will drive around Westminster displaying a message to the Chancellor: “Reverse school cuts or fail another generation. The choice is clear.”

NEU general secretary Daniel Kebede said: “After 14 years of devastating cuts, our schools have reached breaking point.

“Parents, school leaders, teachers and support staff see the impact this has on children every day, with larger class sizes, cuts to music, sport and arts and a workforce retention crisis.

“If this government is serious about change, we need to see a commitment to restore school funding to 2010 levels. We cannot fail another generation of children.”

The NEU said that 70 per cent of schools were receiving less funding in real terms than in 2010.
