US military accused of bombing civilians in Afghanistan on a daily basis

THE US military been accused of bombing houses and civilians in Afghanistan on a daily basis, violating a landmark agreement signed with the Taliban last year.

The Islamist group hit back after the Pentagon accused it of failing to abide by the deal between Washington and Kabul, which led to the partial withdrawal of US troops after 18 years of war and occupation.

“The other side have violated the agreement, almost every day they are violating it,” Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said today.

“They are bombarding civilians, houses and villages, and we have informed them from time to time. These are not just violations of the agreement but violations of human rights.”

Tensions have risen since President Joe Biden took office last week. He pledged to “review” the deal amid warnings that US troops may not be able to leave Afghanistan by the May deadline.

Air strikes by US forces in recent months are supposed to have targeted Taliban positions in a number of provinces in defence of Afghan government forces.

Under the agreement, the Taliban promised to halt attacks on US troops and enter peace talks with the Kabul government, which it had previously refused to engage with on the grounds that it is Washington’s puppet.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby insisted that the US remains committed to a full troop withdrawal, but he demanded that the Taliban keep its promises to reduce violence and sever alleged ties with al-Qaida.

“Without them meeting their commitments to renounce terrorism and to stop the violent attacks against the Afghan national security forces, it’s very hard to see a specific way forward for the negotiated settlement,” he said. “But we’re still committed to that.”

Talks between the Taliban and the government resumed earlier this month. They blame each other for the violence.
