MEN’S FOOTBALL: Yaya Toure has left Belgian club Standard Liege to reunite with Roberto Mancini as his assistant of the Saudi Arabia national team.
Toure has had several backroom roles since ending a distinguished playing career four years ago and only joined Liege in June after a spell as an academy coach at Premier League outfit Tottenham.
But the Ivorian felt the chance to work again with the coach who in July 2010 signed him for Manchester City — where they won the Premier League and the FA Cup — was too tempting to turn down.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Elliott Whitehead will retire from international rugby league following England’s final Test match with Tonga on Saturday.
Bradford-born Whitehead will call time on his England days after his 27th and final cap today, after he decided to extend his international career following last year’s World Cup semi-final heartbreak.
The 34-year-old will now bow out on positive terms no matter the result tomorrow, after England already sealed a series victory over Tonga, going 2-0 up in the three-match series with a 14-4 win at Huddersfield last week.
Whitehead thinks now is the right time to step aside and let England look to the future.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has been ruled out for “several weeks” with a hamstring injury.
After missing three matches, the 31-year-old captained Erik ten Hag’s side on his return against Newcastle in the League Cup earlier this week.
Casemiro was replaced at half-time of the 3-0 defeat and United have now confirmed he will miss a key run of fixtures.
The club said in a statement: “Casemiro will be out for several weeks due to a hamstring injury suffered during our [League] Cup defeat to Newcastle United on Wednesday.”
