Sport in brief: March 24, 2025

NETBALL: Olivia Tchine top-scored with 37 goals as London Pulse eased to a 77-51 win at defending Super League champions Loughborough and moved top of the table on points difference. Second-placed London Mavericks came from behind to beat Leeds 54-53 with a super shot in the last 10 seconds while Nottingham brushed aside Cardiff 70-54 and Birmingham remain without a win after being thumped 77-47 by Manchester.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Belfast Giants lead the Elite League by just one point with a game in hand after second-placed Sheffield enjoyed a six point round with a 10-2 mauling of Glasgow and 4-1 win over Manchester. Belfast had lost 4-3 in Cardiff after a shoot-out before beating Guildford 5-2. Third-placed Nottingham won 3-0 in Glasgow while bottom club Fife continued their pitiful form with consecutive 7-2 losses against Coventry and Guildford.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Danielle Mccray netted 20 points as Super League leaders Oaklands Wolves cruised past third-placed Newcastle 85-59 to regain their two-point advantage over Sheffield, who were not in action during the recent round of matches. The Essex Rebels recovered from a slow start to claim a 109-87 victory at Nottingham on Sunday and winless bottom club London suffered a heavy 80-57 loss in Leicester.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Wales play their second World Cup qualifier with a Group J fixture in North Macedonia this evening. The Welsh won last week’s opener 3-1 against Kazakhstan while North Macedonia enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win in Liechtenstein. Wales currently sit 29th in Fifa’s world rankings, 38 places above North Macedonia. Belgium, ranked eighth, the other member of group J, have yet to start their campaign.
