Sport in brief: February 19, 2025

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Thomas Tuchel’s new-look England will host Wales in a Wembley friendly this October.

The neighbours have met on 104 occasions, most recently during the 2022 World Cup group stage, and will go toe-to-toe once more on October 9.

The FA has also announced a friendly against Senegal — another nation England faced in Qatar — at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground on June 10.

It is the first senior England men’s international at the ground since 1909, with the friendlies completing an international calendar focused on qualification for next year’s World Cup.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Warren Gatland says he is “hurting” following his departure as Wales head coach.

Gatland left his role on February 11 by mutual agreement with the Welsh Rugby Union following a run of 14 successive Test defeats.

The New Zealander’s second reign as Wales boss delivered just six wins in 26 Tests, with Matt Sherratt appointed on an interim basis for remaining Six Nations games against Ireland, Scotland and England.

“The negativity will go away, it will go. Am I hurting a little bit? Yes, of course I am hurting. But I will get over that quickly,” Gatland told the Telegraph.

RACING: Jockey Michael O’Sullivan won the hearts of the Irish people, his funeral heard today.

The 24-year-old Cheltenham Festival-winning rider, from Co Cork, died in hospital on Sunday from injuries he suffered in a fall at Thurles Racecourse in Co Tipperary earlier in the month.

Hundreds of mourners gathered amid pouring rain at John the Baptist Church in Glantane, in Co Cork, today.

Priest Fr Gerard Coleman told the service: “Everyone loved him. He was an incredibly talented and dedicated sportsman and will never be forgotten.”
