Sport in brief: August 3, 2023

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The long journey to FA Cup glory begins again tomorrow evening with the first ten of this year’s 208 Extra Preliminary Round ties. Northwich Victoria, who reached the fourth round proper in 1978 and lost to Sunderland in the third round in 2006, will travel to Burscough to take on Skelmersdale United in tomorrow night’s stand-out fixture. All 208 winners will receive £1,125 in prize money whilst the losers get £375.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Table-topping Glentoran take the Irish Women’s Premiership only unbeaten record into tomorrow night’s home game with Mid Ulster looking to protect their six point lead over second-placed Cliftonville, who are up against winless bottom of the table Derry. Form-team Sion Swifts host Ballymena United before Lisburn play Larne and Crusaders Strikers meet up with Linfield in a Belfast derby at their Seaview ground.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Warrington take on Super League leaders Catalans Dragons tomorrow evening looking to end a run of six straight losses in all competitions that led to head coach Daryl Powell leaving the club “by mutual consent” earlier this week. Elsewhere tomorrow night second-placed Wigan will be looking for revenge against Hull KR in a repeat of their recent Challenge Cup semi final and second-bottom Castleford welcome Huddersfield to the Jungle.

MEN’S CRICKET: With defending champions England due to start their one-day World Cup campaign in India at the beginning of October attention has already switched away from test match cricket to the shorter format games. The first round games in the domestic 50-over cup continue tomorrow with Sussex taking on Durham, 2021 winners Glamorgan at Worcester, Warwickshire travelling to Somerset and Gloucester hosting Northamptonshire.
