Sport in brief: April 9, 2024

SPEEDWAY:

Brady Kurtz top-scored with 11+1 points as Belle Vue brushed aside Leicester 51-33 on Monday night to claim their first Premiership win of the season.

Norick Blodorn bagged 9+1 and Dan Bewley won three of his four starts for nine points in a strong all-round performance from the Manchester-based club.

The meeting was abandoned before the final heat due to heavy rain, but the result stands.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL:

London Lions face Besiktas in the second leg of the EuroCup final at the Copper Box Arena tomorrow night.

The Turkish team hold a slim seven-point advantage after winning 75-68 in Istanbul last week, but London will be protecting an enviable record of having won every home EuroCup game by double digits this season.

Neither side has won the competition before.

MEN’S CRICKET:

Rain devastated the opening round of fixtures in the County Championship, with two of the nine games being abandoned without a ball being bowled and all but one of the other games ending in a draw.

Last year’s Division One runners-up Essex were the only team to gain a win bonus after paceman Sam Cook took 6-14 as they skittled out Nottinghamshire for 80 at Trent Bridge in a crushing 254 run victory.

MEN’S BASKETBALL:

The battle for the final NBA play-off places continues tomorrow morning as the LA Clippers visit the Phoenix Suns in a crunch Western Conference fixture and Dallas face a Charlotte team that have already failed to make the cut.

In the Eastern Conference Philadelphia have home court advantage against struggling Detroit, Orlando are in Houston, Miami face Atlanta and the Knicks are at Chicago.
