South Africa’s ANC slams West for lack of ‘meaningful action’ on international law violations by allies

SOUTH AFRICA’S African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Fikile Mbalula slammed the West today for a lack of meaningful action on violations of international law by Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

He told reporters during a media briefing that the “robust response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine contrasts sharply with a deplorable lack of meaningful action on grave violations by some of their allies including Israel, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.”

He said that the ANC “aligned itself with a report of Amnesty International’s 2022 annual report which highlights double standards throughout the world on human rights and the failure of the international community to unite around consistently applied human rights and universal values.”

The ANC was concerned that unilateralism is a growing problem, with the West threatening to violate international law and sidestepping international consensus to impose its will.

Mr Mbalula said that the party “called on the United Nations to develop and adopt a peace plan that must be agreed to by the US-led Nato and Russian Federation.”

The secretary general said that the ANC was calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and for South Africa to reassert its leadership role on the continent.
