SNP will push symbolic vote on Waspi compensation

SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn has called for Labour MPs to back his calls for a Waspi U-turn.

Labour Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall has controversially refused to pay the £2,950 compensation, recommended by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, to women born in the 1950s affected by the department’s “maladministration.”

Her decision last year came despite many Labour MPs backing the Waspi campaign as candidates — including fellow Cabinet members.

Urging Labour MPs “to stop the broken promises” and back his Bill for compensation next week, Mr Flynn said: “With a supermajority in Parliament, what matters now is how Labour MPs choose to vote.

“Scottish Labour MPs must finally do the right thing and vote for this Bill to ensure compensation for Waspi women.”

One Labour MP who intends to back Mr Flynn’s Bill is Alloa and Grangemouth’s Brian Leishman.

He  told the Star: “Labour stood with the Waspi women when we were in opposition, I stood with them when I was a candidate, and I will absolutely continue to stand with them now and in any parliamentary vote.

“I hope many Labour colleagues will reflect on this injustice and do the same.”
