CYCLING: The first major event of the men’s road racing season rolls out of Prospect, Adelaide on Tuesday morning with Welshman Stephen Williams defending his Tour Down Under title.

The first stage of the 25th edition of this race is a moderately hilly 150 kilometres route to Gumercha.

Swiss rider Noemi Ruegg won the women’s race which finished on Sunday, 13 seconds ahead of Silke Smulders with Britain’s Alice Towers 10th.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Unbeaten Chelsea have opened up a seven-point lead in the Super League after they eased to a 5-0 win at West Ham, and Ella Toone bagged a hat-trick on her return from injury as Manchester United earned a 4-2 victory over neighbours City.

Arsenal beat bottom club Crystal Palace 5-0 on Sunday to move second, level on points with United, and Tottenham edged out struggling Leicester 1-0.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Brett Perlini netted three times as the Cardiff Devils thumped Grenoble 6-1 on Sunday to become only the second British team to win the Continental Cup.

The Devils lost just once in the competition, to Kazakhstan’s Arlan Kokshetau, who were unable to compete in the finals after the UK government denied entrance visas to members of a squad that includes 11 players from Belarus and Russia.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Oaklands Wolves thrashed defending champions London 93-49 to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Super League season and remain two points clear of Sheffield, who brushed aside Leicester 105-79.

Kat Tudor top-scored with 23 points as third-placed Caledonia came from behind to beat Newcastle 92-84, Manchester held on for an 85-80 win in Nottingham and Durham Palatinates saw off Cardiff 69-58.
