SCOTLAND’S railway “simply isn’t good enough,” Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said today after private operator ScotRail incurred record fines.
After a weekend of bank holiday travel chaos in Glasgow, figures revealed that ScotRail missed performance targets in 22 out of 34 areas in early 2018.
The targets are linked to financial penalties which are then re-invested in the railway. Over three months, the company accrued penalties of £1.6 million, which is almost £400,000 more than the previous quarter.
Answering an urgent question from Lib Dem MSP Mike Rumbles yesterday, Mr Yousaf said the company’s performance “simply isn’t good enough.”
But he said improvements had been made recently and the company was implementing “action plans for several areas of concern” and “two internal reviews.”
But Mr Rumbles said: “No-one’s suggesting there hasn’t been any improvements, but it’s failed 22 out of 34 areas.”
ScotRail is also in dispute with rail unions over cuts to CCTV staff, but strike action was suspended following progress in negotiations.
