ANAS SARWAR faces fresh calls to “get his house in order” today, after his adviser was accused of running “a constant undermining campaign” against Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Leonard.
The right-wing frontbencher, who was beaten by Mr Leonard to the Scottish Labour leadership last year, employs John Duncan as a senior researcher at Holyrood.
Mr Duncan was in the spotlight yesterday after the Red Robin website drew attention to a series of his outbursts on social media.
In one tweet, he described Mr Corbyn as “our worst ever leader.” He also said the Scottish party was “going backward” under Mr Leonard’s reign and “the leadership have nobody to blame but themselves.”
He described the Scottish executive committee’s decision to veto a coalition deal between Aberdeen Labour councillors and their Tory counterparts as “shocking and shameful.”
Only last month, he replied in a thread of tweets which tagged Mr Leonard’s own account: “I still fondly remember the good old days when Labour wanted to get into power and actually do things?”
Mr Sarwar, who is now Labour’s health spokesman at Holyrood, has been accused of continuing to fight factional battles following his defeat in the leadership election.
“Sarwar needs to get his house in order,” one influential party activist told the Star.
“He spent the 2017 general election and leadership election telling members he was fully behind Corbyn.
“But by allowing his staff to run a constant undermining campaign against Corbyn and Leonard he’s showing he has no control over his own office at best, and is actively promoting anti-Labour positions at worst.
“It’s time we all pushed in the same direction. There’s a world to win.”
The Star contacted Mr Sarwar for comment, but an automatic email reply said he was on leave. Mr Duncan did not reply to a request for comment.
A Scottish Labour spokesman said: “We don’t comment on staff.”
Mr Sarwar has previously been criticised for his support for Asim Khan, who was criticised in an employment tribunal ruling in 2016, and is seeking selection for the Glasgow South-West Westminster constituency.
An employment tribunal found Mr Khan responsible for a “complete failure” to protect a woman worker at now-defunct charity Roshni, which he chaired. Mr Khan denies any wrongdoing.
